Ambronay Abbey
A jewel of the Benedictine heritage, the Abbey of Ambronay is one of the destination's must-sees.
Rich in a centuries-old history, the abbey was founded during the reign of Charlemagne by Barnard, an officer turned monk. Little by little, the growing monastic community developed the abbey which was equipped with numerous buildings and defensive towers. A later 15th century cloister completes the abbey: today it remains an example of Flamboyant Gothic style architecture. Hidden by the foliage of trees in a peaceful park, the abbey invites you to stroll from discovery to discovery.
An international festival
Once a year, the Abbey still resonates with sounds that recall the life of the monks of yesteryear during the Ambronay Baroque Music Festival. This festival is internationally recognized for the quality of the artists who perform there. Musicians confirmed or in the making, they are the meeting place for the Indian summer of the territory
